COMPUTER EDUCATION AND TRAINING CENTER

In today’s technologically oriented society, more and more employment opportunities require at least basic familiarity with computers. The introduction of the Internet has opened up new forms of communication, leisure activities, and recreational possibilities. Shopping online, planning a vacation or participating in chat rooms are just a few examples of what has become commonplace for millions of Americans. Unfortunately, in the recent past individuals with developmental disabilities have not had the ability or opportunity to take advantage of these new resources.

In the summer of 2001, STAR established the Computer Training Center based at STAR’s South Norwalk Office. Classes are offered weekly during the twelve-week sessions. Each class is one to two hours in duration and there is one Lab period per week.

The computer classes that are offered:

  • Introduce individuals to computer technologies in a supportive and learning environment
  • Teach basic computer literacy skills
  • Teach job readiness skills for individuals who have employment potential
  • Teach skills needed to access the Internet
  • Teach skills to access communication, e-mail, recreational and leisure activities online
