The "Galaxy of STARS" Story

In 2002 STAR Inc., Lighting the Way… celebrated a 50th anniversary of providing service to infants, children and adults with developmental disabilities.

As part of this celebration, STAR conceptualized and implemented “Galaxy of Stars”, an art in public places project. Sponsored by local businesses and friends of STAR, outstanding local artists have uniquely decorated star sculptures, which were on display in Norwalk, Westport, Weston, Wilton, Darien and New Canaan throughout the summer.

The proceeds of the “constellation” of stars were auctioned at the First Galaxy of STARS Gala Dinner Dance and Auction, in the fall of 2002. Based on the success of the event it was held again in 2003 with the addition of a full array of auction prizes. All proceeds benefit STAR’s services and supports to individuals with developmental disabilities.

From birth, children with special needs receive early intervention services through STAR’s Rubino Family Center Birth to Three Program. Our goal is to strengthen the capacity of families to meet the developmental and health-related needs of their infants and children who have developmental disabilities. Throughout childhood, STAR continues to provide family and sibling support, respite, advocacy, referral, family education and recreation.

When young adults with disabilities graduate from high school, STAR provides assessment and job training, which leads to employment. This employment allows individuals to live more independently as they become a part of a company and their community, earning wages and benefits, and making new friends.

STAR also provides training, supervision and support to adults in their own homes, apartments and group homes, enabling them to make their own decisions and assume greater responsibility for their lives.
